A few days ago campers started a project celebrating the Japanese festival Tanabata. (to read more on this festival and the previous project, please follow this link: http://campleoarts.blogspot.com/2013/07/festivals-in-july.html)
To help continue our celebrations we began a group project this friday to create hundreds of butterflies.
The idea for this project came from the same artist who helped inspire our finger knitting project from a few days ago, Tali Buchler. The original project created by Tali Buchler was one that had the purpose of bringing together a community around the public library. For Camp Leo the project touched on ideas of Responsibility, one of the four core values of the YMCA.
The butterflies were created by campers when they used watercolors to decorate and paint folded encyclopedia pages. Many library's, when books become outdated, are forced to throw away their surplus to make way for new items. With environmental Responsibility in mind we decided to reuse some of these old books and make art from them!
The result was this wonderful butterfly garden:
