Today we began our week long celebration of Stars and Stripes, Camp Leo and the Lionville YMCA's 4th of July centered extravaganza!
In art world campers learned about one of the most influential american inventions: The airplane. The Wright Brothers, originally bicycle salesman, were the first successful pilots of an airplane. In case you were wondering what made their invention so different from the thousands of other inventors: the Wright brothers came up with a concept influenced from a bicycle: The three-axis control. This new controlling ability allowed the pilot to determine an airplanes movements, while maintaing the all important balance. When did all this amazing stuff happen? 110 years ago! In 1903 the Wright brothers had their first successful flight.
After talking about flying, airplanes, travel, and of course, Disney World, camp Leo campers were excited to create their own flying machines.
We started simple. Taking the basic design for a whirly-gig, or helicopter, campers started coloring, folding, and testing their new "inventions".
Once campers had worked past this stage we began to explore new designs. Each camp made at least one airplane, most made two, and almost all were varying techniques. This meant that campers could test, race, and have contests with their new crafts.
